The region will finance, in addition to the EU, hundreds of hydrogen cars and vans for its Zero Emission Valley project.

Hydrogen still struggles to establish itself as an energy source in the ecological transition of mobility. In cars, sales are anecdotal, with only 193 vehicles in 2022, although this is three times more than in 2021. Most of these are concentrated in Paris, where the Hype taxi fleet accounts for these registrations. But another region, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, also wants to believe in hydrogen vehicles.

For Businesses Only

It has just reaffirmed its intention to create its Zero Emission Valley or “ZEV”. It hopes to see at least 500 vehicles, 20 refueling stations, and two electrolyzers to produce hydrogen more cleanly. However, the project is still in its early stages, with 50 vehicles and 3 active stations.

To accelerate the movement, the region plans to fund 400 vehicles to make them more accessible to professionals. The vehicle can be a traditional sedan, or a hydrogen van such as Stellantis – Citroën ë-Jumpy Hydrogen, Peugeot e-Expert Hydrogen, and Opel Vivaro-e Hydrogen – or the Renault Master H2-Tech developed with Hyvia.

Up to €28,400 in aid in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The region provides substantial purchasing assistance for a new hydrogen vehicle. The aid is, of course, conditional on driving at least 15,000 kilometers per year over a minimum period of four years and refueling at one of the region’s stations. An additional EU aid exists for vehicles connected to the Zero Emission Valley Project, ranging from €5,000 to €9,000. This brings the total aid to between €12,600 and €19,800 depending on the size of the company for a sedan, and up to €28,400 for a van.

Thus, the only two Toyota Mirai or Hyundai Nexo cars are much more attractive, with a quarter reduction in price. For a van, the aid is significant, especially since a Peugeot e-Expert Hydrogen costs more than €115,000 excluding taxes. This aid will limit the number to the first 400 hydrogen vehicles.
