Prices on the rise, Tesla is having fun scaring us!

The Tesla Model 3 is expected to see its customs fees increase in early July. Tesla announces a price hike, but there are doubts.

The European Commission has decided to impose customs duties that could reach nearly 50% on electric vehicles produced in China, in order to sanction the alleged subsidies given by Beijing to its manufacturers to help them compete, or crush depending on the point of view, European competition. Brussels informed car manufacturers on Wednesday that it would provisionally apply additional duties ranging from 17% to 38% on electric vehicles imported from China starting next month. These additional taxes will be added to the existing 10% customs duties on all vehicles. The amount of the additional duties depends on the cooperation of manufacturers within the framework of the investigation launched several months ago. For example, the good student BYD will incur a 17% fee while the poor performer MG takes 38.1%!

The Chinese response will be decisive

For Tesla, nothing is decided as the manufacturer, if it produces its Model 3 in China, remains very much American. It is assumed that it will inherit an average additional tax of around 21%, but what if it does not receive any Chinese subsidies? Manufacturers have until July 4 to plead their case, and nothing assures that these customs fees will indeed be applied because the counterattack from Beijing could be fierce and not limited to just automobiles.

But at Tesla, in doubt they still invite you to hurry to buy your Model 3 before the end of the month, you never know… and it empties the stocks! Knowing that this increase should only impact the price of the American-Chinese by 2,000 to 3,000 euros, one can imagine a commercial gesture from Tesla to maintain the prices. The brand is already offering Supercharger kilometers worth nearly 1,000 euros, so they must have some discounts up their sleeve.

So a small price increase is possible, an explosion in the price, we will see.
