Is the Ecological Bonus About to Take a Hit?

Starting January 1, 2025, the ecological bonus for the purchase of an electric vehicle is expected to be significantly reduced.

The government has thus made a decisive cut, reducing the budget allocated for promoting electric mobility from 1.5 to 1 billion euros for 2025. To achieve this reduction, it is now certain that the aid for purchasing a new electric car will be decreased next year. Currently, the bonus is limited to 4,000 euros for households whose taxable income exceeds 15,400 euros per person. For others, this incentive can reach a maximum amount of 7,000 euros. No figures have been announced, but there are talks of 3,000 euros, down from 4,000 euros currently for the base bonus.

Years go by and the bonus continues to be trimmed. Initially set at 6,000 euros in 2022 for all electric cars, it was quickly limited to only European productions. Moreover, it has continuously decreased to 5,000 euros in 2023 and 4,000 euros in 2024.

The accessibility threshold for this bonus, currently set at 47,000 euros, could also be lowered. It is indeed quite surprising that a Volkswagen ID.3 GTX Performance with over 320 hp qualifies for such help! Even if it is French and produced in France, what can be said about the Alpine A290… The aim of this aid is to facilitate access to electric mobility, not to reduce the price of 100% electric pleasure.

According to the government’s own words, the aids will “primarily finance the most modest households”. One can therefore think that Social Leasing, which allows renting an electric car at a lower cost, will be maintained, but it will inevitably see its budget reduced. It is safe to say that it will be necessary to act quickly to benefit from a subsidized electric car.
