Renault 5 drops to 150 Euros per month!

We had previously rented the Renault 5 at 200 Euros per month with a 37-month lease and now find it to be less expensive. What has changed?
Renault is offering financing options to properly launch its new Renault 5 E-Tech 100% electric in the Evolution 120hp Urban Range version. At 150 euros per month, it’s especially attractive, but as usual, you need to carefully read the fine print at the end of the offer and patiently follow the asterisks to understand exactly what you will be paying.
So here we have a long-term rental, known as a Long-term Lease. You pay a monthly rent for a set number of months, and at the end of the period, you must return the vehicle. In the case of a Lease with Option to Purchase (LOA), you have the option to acquire the car at the end of the term, but in our view, this is not the most advantageous option. Indeed, after 3 or 4 years, the car is outdated and you might want to change it. A positive point for this LLD offer, despite the obligation to pay for standard refurbishment costs and additional kilometers at the end of the contract.

The term is set at 37 months and allows a maximum of 30,000 km. 10,000 km per year is generous for a city-oriented vehicle, so no issues there. But things get complicated with the first rent amounting to… 9,500 euros! Oh yes, that’s far from the 150 euros advertised. We dislike these excessive initial contributions relative to the monthly payments, but it’s a fairly common strategy. Other manufacturers like MG offer deals without a down payment, but French consumers are less accustomed to that. Renault reassures us by stating that this down payment of 9,500 euros is reduced to 5,500 euros after a €4,000 ecological bonus. To qualify, you must meet very strict income criteria, so we’re estimating rather a €2,000 bonus plus a down payment of 7,500 euros.
After 3 years, you will have spent €12,900 for a car that’s newly listed at €25,990 after the bonus deduction. Exactly 50% of its value, which is not outstanding, but keep in mind it’s a new model, selling very well, so no crazy discounts are expected.
Our recommendation remains to wait for financing offers on the 95hp version, which will arrive at the beginning of 2025. Weaker in power, certainly, but with a reasonable range of 300 km on the WLTP cycle, compared to 312 km for the 120hp version—an inconsequential difference. And above all, at a much more attractive price!
