The future electric Golf looks… like a Golf!

Volkswagen Golf

The Volkswagen Golf is gearing up to go electric, and the surprise is that there really isn’t one.

During a recent internal meeting, Volkswagen gave its employees a sneak peek at the upcoming electric Golf, set to become the ninth generation of the model. This teaser, still very discreet, reveals one essential detail: the German compact will remain instantly recognizable.

Even in the shadows, the silhouette clearly evokes that of the Volkswagen Golf. Slightly sloped roof, compact tailgate, pronounced fenders, and a bold rear spoiler: the typical proportions of the model seem intact. This choice is far from trivial for Volkswagen, which aims to preserve the stylistic DNA of one of its most iconic cars, despite the shift to electric.

ID. for everyone

This upcoming generation could be named ID.Golf, continuing the brand’s strategy of associating its electric label “ID” with historical models. It is expected to gradually replace the Volkswagen ID.3 in the manufacturer’s electric lineup.

However, the gasoline-powered Golf will not disappear immediately. The current Volkswagen Golf Mk8 will continue to be produced for several years to meet the ongoing demand for combustion engine compacts. Its production is expected to be transferred to the Puebla plant in Mexico starting in 2027.

The future electric Golf will be assembled in Wolfsburg, Germany, the historical site of the model. It will be based on Volkswagen’s new SSP (Scalable Systems Platform). This next-generation architecture promises an 800-volt electrical system, a cell-to-pack battery technology, and a zonal electronic architecture developed in collaboration with Rivian.

Several configurations are expected, with one or two electric motors. And true to tradition, the lineup should also include sporty versions. The legendary Volkswagen Golf GTI and Volkswagen Golf R could thus make their return in a 100% electric version.
