The car from the movie Back to the Future is now electric
Automotive icon in Hollywood, the DeLorean from the 1985 film Back to the Future is now converted to electric.
This is a leap in time that all car fans and the Back to the Future trilogy have been waiting for. Marty McFly and Professor Emmett Brown – known as Doc – will now be able to make time-space jumps in a 100% electric DeLorean DMC-12.
This idea of conversion (known as retrofit in English) is credited to the English startup Electrogenic. Founded in 2018, this company is not new to the game. It has already converted several iconic cars such as the Rolls Royce Phantom, the Porsche 911, the Austin Mini, the Land Rover Defender, and the Jaguar Type-E.

The DeLorean DNA is preserved
The DeLorean was never celebrated for the relatively mediocre quality of its mechanics, a 2.8-liter naturally aspirated V6 from the Peugeot-Renault-Volvo (PRV) alliance, with a staggering power of… 130 horsepower. This was one of the reasons why the DeLorean was a dismal commercial failure upon its release in the 1970s, with less than 8,500 cars produced. It must be said that it was conceived during the oil crisis and the anti-pollution regulations were extremely strict at that time.
Therefore, one could say that electrification is a boon as the electric power now rises to 160 kW, which is 218 horsepower! Acceleration to 100 km/h now takes only 5 seconds, compared to more than double that for the original model!

The 43 kWh battery pack and the complete transformation add only 40 kg to the overall weight compared to the thermal version. This is enough to hopefully achieve around 150 kilometers of driving with less risk of running out of battery.
Electrogenic does not provide specific pricing, but conversions on Mini models cost around 20,000 euros. For the DeLorean, one can reasonably expect around 25,000 euros. Let’s say you need to be passionate…
