Tesla Takes a (Small) Breather!

Tesla Model Y Range 2025 Standard

After a disastrous 2025 in the Old Continent, Tesla is finally beginning to lift its head in Europe.

The registration figures for April show a rebound for Tesla in several key markets… although, in some cases, the bar had become so low that it was almost difficult to do worse.

This is particularly true in France, where Tesla shows a spectacular increase of 112% year-on-year according to figures released by Reuters. An impressive figure at first glance, but it comes after months of free fall and a particularly painful start to 2025 for the American brand. The same observation can be made in Denmark (+102%) and Sweden (+111%), while the Netherlands grows more modestly (+23%).

The recovery is mainly based on the Model Y, which has become one of the best-selling vehicles in Europe this spring. The Model 3 is also contributing to this rebound thanks to shorter delivery times and resilient demand despite increasingly aggressive competition.

But the Chinese threat is real

As Tesla tries to regain its footing, Chinese manufacturers continue to gain ground. BYD, MG, and XPeng are rapidly advancing in several European markets, particularly in the Nordic countries where Tesla still dominated widely two years ago.

The energy context is also benefiting electric models. With the rise in fuel prices since the end of February, linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, more European motorists are turning to electric vehicles. EVs now represent over 20% of new car sales in Europe in the first quarter of 2026.

Tesla has also received a regulatory boost in the Netherlands, where the RDW has approved the supervised use of the FSD system. A broader European approval may follow.

Nevertheless, the situation remains fragile: sales are still down in Norway (-61%), Spain (-47%), and Portugal (-33%). In short, Tesla is breathing a little easier in Europe… but is not yet out of intensive care.
