Tesla Model Y: It Covers 300,000 km in 2 Years and Provides Its Assessment
As a taxi driver, Fabrice shared his astonishing experience after 300,000 kilometers traveled in a Model Y on a Tesla forum.
An example certainly does not equate to a generalization, but the documentation work carried out by this taxi driver who switched to electric is very rich in lessons, especially regarding the reliability often criticized of Tesla.
While the powertrains are rarely criticized at Tesla, the same cannot be said for other components, particularly those in contact with occupants (steering wheel, switchgear, upholstery, door joints, etc.).

A logbook with all the actions on his Tesla

Despite the 300,000 kilometers traveled, the purchase is recent: April 2023, so it’s been two and a half years. Then, month by month, Fabrice will note the actions taken on his Model Y… mostly the changes and swaps of tires. But also the brands and models from manufacturers.
It is noted that he abandoned the original Hankook tires after only 61,000 kilometers, and then switched to Pirelli tires with an average lifespan of 82,000 kilometers. The average replacement cost was 1000 euros. During the last change, after 223,974 km, Fabrice had to perform a wheel alignment due to significant wear on the right rear tire.
For the rest, there is very little to criticize after such mileage compared to a thermal equivalent. No maintenance, but a few rare parts replacements: a camera (155 euros including VAT), a window switch and cabin filter (270 euros including VAT), and a set of wiper blades (24 euros including VAT).
Rare and costly interventions

You get accustomed to the absence of technical problems, but when rare issues arise, it’s always frustrating. Notably, there were two costly repairs: one was expected after 282,530 kilometers (rear bushings, 1663 euros including VAT), while the other was less so after only two years. This involved a replacement of the high and low voltage converter due to a sealing defect, costing 1871 euros including VAT.
It’s a shame, otherwise Tesla was very close to being faultless after 300,000 kilometers.
Amazing savings
Finally, the relevance of switching to electric is highlighted by huge operating savings, both in energy and maintenance. Fabrice calculated his consumption at 17.3 kWh/100 kilometers, based on an average of 318.5 kilometers traveled per day!
He estimated his operating cost at 2.4 cents/km, including charges.
Lastly, battery wear, after such mileage, is very limited: only 12% according to the onboard computer. Truly incredible!
In terms of CO2 emissions, these 300,000 kilometers represent a reduction of approximately 48 tons based on a diesel sedan emitting 160 g of CO2/km. A gigantic figure. Imagine if the entire fleet switched to electric, it would be a breath of fresh air for the planet!
And what about the wallet? Still on a cycle of 300,000 km, the advantage is equally clear: with an average consumption of 17.3 kWh/100 km charged at €0.20 per kWh, the energy cost of an electric taxi would reach €10,500, compared to €39,900 for a diesel consuming 7 L/100 km at €1.90/L. The result: nearly €30,000 in savings during usage in favor of electric.
Are there still skeptics?
