Tesla Increases Range on Certain Models. Here’s Which Ones!

Tesla will increase the range of certain models by more than 10% thanks to the use of new batteries.
Ongoing technological advancements continue to improve the performance of models throughout their lifespan. Tesla is never shy about communicating its leading position in the electric vehicle industry. The American company is set to soon industrialize a new battery cell – 4680 equipped on a Model Y, for example – which would have an energy density more than 10% higher than the current generation.
As it stands, only two models in the lineup will benefit from this new development: the Model Y and the Cybertruck produced at the Austin, Texas factory. Tesla specifies that this increase in energy density offers two possibilities: either extending the cars’ range or reducing their weight, since a smaller battery would provide the same mileage. Interesting.

Tesla also admits that the increase in density is primarily due to a higher nickel content, which is not without consequences on the vehicle’s cost. This could tip the scales toward reducing the cars’ weight by shrinking the size of the battery… and thus decreasing their raw material needs.
With such a battery, the Model Y – currently the best-selling model and a simple, upgraded and re-bodied Model 3 – could see its basic range increase from 455 to 500 km, and even nearly 600 km with the Long Range version.
It remains to be seen when this new battery will be rolled out across all markets, including Europe.
