Tesla Unveils Its Well-Known Model Y in China

Tesla strikes back in China by multiplying the variants of its Model Y to regain market share. And it works.

Abundance of goods does no harm. A principle that Tesla seems to be leveraging in China where the American manufacturer has just added a fourth variant of its Model Y to its lineup.

Indeed, while the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive version has existed in Europe and North America for years (in the latter market, the Rear-Wheel Drive version was even removed to avoid self-competition), it has now arrived in China and more broadly in Asia.

An Unprecedented Range in China

Priced at 288,500 yuan, about 35,000 euros, this Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive will especially attract buyers with its promise of a record range of 821 km according to the Chinese CLTC mixed cycle. This cycle prioritizes urban trips in gigantic metropolises rather than the American highways used in the EPA cycle, the strictest in the world. In Europe, the range of this version is 629 km.

The positioning of this new variant cleverly fills a gap between the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive and Long Range All-Wheel Drive, while the 6-seater Model Y L tops the range.

Likewise in terms of performance, as the acceleration to 100 km/h is reduced by over a second, now standing at 5.6 seconds. Finally, note that the interior is exactly the same as the Rear-Wheel Drive, meaning that the central screen remains “small”, at 15.4 inches.

This strategy of multiplying models in Tesla’s catalog is paying off as sales have been rising since last August and the introduction of the highly envied Model Y L, which is not yet intended to be sold in Europe or North America.

Still remaining is a version of the Model Y to be produced shortly at the Shanghai Gigafactory: the Performance. Then it can be said that the circle will be complete.
