The Porsche Taycan takes the record from Tesla at the Nürburgring

The Porsche Taycan Turbo S dethrones the Tesla Model S Plaid, but the gap between the two cars is not very significant.
To highlight the performance of its Taycan, Porsche asked Lars Kern, one of its development drivers, to set a new record at the Nürburgring. And the initiative was successful: covering the 20.8 km track in 7 minutes and 33 seconds, the Taycan became the fastest series electric car on this circuit. It surpasses the Tesla Model S Plaid, which had recorded a time of 7 minutes 35 seconds and 579 milliseconds.
A Taycan Turbo S equipped with a new Performance kit
The Taycan used for the record was a Turbo S version, fitted with a roll cage (mandatory equipment) and racing bucket seats. Apart from that, it was in its original configuration.
The car was equipped with a new Performance kit, currently only offered in Germany. It includes 21-inch RS Spyder wheels and sport Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires approved for road use. The presence of this kit also entails a software update to the chassis control system to adapt it to the new tires.
It was mainly to showcase this new equipment that Porsche went after a new record. Lars Kern emphasized the performance gains it provides. “Thanks to the new Performance kit, I was able to push to the limit — and at the same time, the car was even more precise and agile,” he stated, for example.
Porsche also takes this opportunity to praise the efficiency of the automated launch system, which increases the maximum combined power to 761 hp. Normally, the Taycan Turbo S is limited to 625 hp.
Faster than the Model S Plaid on the Nürburgring, the Taycan Turbo S is however beaten in terms of range (469 km vs. 600 km for its American rival). It is also much more expensive: while a Model S Plaid (1020 hp and 100 kWh battery) starts at €138,990, the Taycan Turbo S costs at least €193,061. And adding the Performance kit in Germany costs around €13,000 more.
