Much more expensive than the Model Y, what remains for the Model 3?
Tesla has gotten into the habit of playing yo-yo with its prices, but the new customs fees put the Model 3 in an uncomfortable position!
This comparison between the two star models of Tesla is, of course, made possible only by the application of the Environmental Bonus to which only the Model Y is eligible and the new customs fees that the Model 3 is expected to face in early July. But when Tesla adds 2,000 euros in discounts to the 4,000 euros of government rebates benefiting the Model Y, the American manufacturer’s pricing range finds itself in an unprecedented situation.
This Wednesday, June 19, the Tesla Model 3 Propulsion is displayed on the Tesla France website at 39,990 euros with the threat of an additional charge of 2,000 to 3,000 euros compared to 38,990 euros for a Model Y Propulsion. We are talking about potentially a 4,000 euro difference in favor of the Y!

To the credit of the Model 3, it is indeed a recently restyled model with improved range. The look is refined, some might say more aerodynamic, but the idea is simply to give more personality to the American and distinguish it from the previous model. Nothing revolutionary on the menu. Inside, we note the disappearance of the stalks on either side of the steering wheel and the appearance of an 8-inch screen for rear passengers. Finally, and perhaps the most important point, the range reaches 513 km in the mixed WLTP cycle with acceleration to 100 km/h in 6″1.
One Tesla or another Tesla?
But the “sedan” format is losing popularity, with customers today preferring SUVs. The main rival of the Model 3 is therefore nothing less than its American sister, the Model Y. An elevated Model 3 that is a bit more spacious and was previously sold at a higher price. But that was before. The Model Y sees its range diminished by 60 km compared to the Model 3 due to its less advantageous aerodynamics and its standard 19-inch wheels. In daily use, this is frankly painless, and for long trips, with 400 km under your belt, you’re happy to take a break. Released after the first generation Model 3, its interior does not have to be embarrassed in terms of finish and ergonomics.
The only shadow hanging over the Model Y is the upcoming arrival of its restyled version. But this has constantly been postponed to the point that we now expect it in 2025. This extends the lifespan of the current model.
Ultimately, it is up to the buyer to determine whether the sedan format suits them and if they are willing to pay more for a model that will not be replaced in the short term.
