Mahindra, Indian tractor giant, unveils two electric SUVs

These models are the first of six electric vehicles expected to be deployed by Mahindra by 2028.

Before talking about electric cars, let us introduce Mahindra. Founded in 1945 and based in India, this group is one of the largest multinational federations of companies in the world, with 260,000 employees spread across more than 100 countries. It holds a leading position in agricultural equipment, utility SUVs, and financial services in India and is simply the largest tractor company in the world by sales volume. It is highly active in renewable energy, agriculture, logistics, hospitality, and real estate sectors. Overall, this group has intelligently diversified its activities and is well equipped to become one of the main challengers to Chinese manufacturers in the very near future. So when it unveils two very attractive electric models, our full attention is captured!

On Tuesday, Mahindra announced the launch of its first electric SUVs, the BE 6e and the XEV 9e, at relatively high prices for the local market, around 20,000 euros. These prices are explained by the manufacturer’s decision to align the prices of its new electric SUVs with those of the most sold high-end internal combustion engine SUVs in India. A very aggressive strategy aimed at immediately giving a positive image of its products to attract new electric converts reassured by the quality, but also appealing to existing buyers who want to upgrade in terms of equipment. Quite the opposite of the strategy of its major local rival TATA, which tends to level prices downward.

On the technology side, traditional but very solid with LFP (lithium iron phosphate) batteries supplied by BYD for ranges close to 600 km, and fast charging allows batteries to go from 20% to 80% in 20 minutes with a 175 kW charger. Mahindra has no time to lose, as production will start at the beginning of 2025 for deliveries in the second half of the year.
