Sickened by politics, Elon Musk returns to his beloved Tesla

After a tumultuous year in politics that has severely impacted Tesla, Elon Musk seems determined to turn the page.

A year ago, Musk claimed that electing Donald Trump was crucial for the future of the United States. He did not hesitate to spend nearly $300 million to support the Republican candidate and agreed to lead the DOGE program, resulting in massive cuts to the federal budget. But today, faced with criticism, global protests against Tesla, and even acts of violence against his showrooms, Musk appears disillusioned. For the first time, the armor of the superman seemed to crack as he admitted fearing for his life and the safety of his family.

In several recent interviews, he indicated that he would no longer fund political campaigns unless he saw a real interest in them. His close associates explain that his political efforts have not had the hoped-for impact, and that he now wishes to focus on projects that matter to him.

Because Tesla is going through a critical period as the company plans to launch its fully autonomous car as early as June in Austin. Musk has promised this “Cybercab” without steering wheel or pedals for years, and it may finally be time for the golden vehicle to show its grille. There’s also the new Model Y to relaunch, or finally launch, since so far the numbers are disappointing with sales plummeting by more than 10% and profits down by 70% since the beginning of the year.

On the SpaceX side, Musk wants to accelerate the development of Starship, with the next test flight scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, May 27, aiming to send an uncrewed mission to Mars in 2026. SpaceX also plays a key role in NASA’s lunar ambitions, which wants to return to our satellite before China. But many technical challenges remain to be addressed.

Against all odds, while his investment in politics is increasingly questioned within his own camp, his withdrawal from the political scene could weaken his former friends deprived of his financial and logistical support for the upcoming elections. After taking personal and financial risks to defend his beliefs, Musk today chooses to return to what he does best: innovate and aim for the stars.
