Kia EV9, the Slayer of the Tesla Model X?

You might not realize it from France, but the Kia EV9 is currently causing a stir in the United States against the Tesla Model X.

France isn’t the primary market for the Kia EV9, let’s be honest. Or so it seems. A recent conversation with a company official revealed the scope of a major success achieved by the South Korean manufacturer. Including in Europe, the EV9 is gearing up to be a real hit, considering its sales and annual production targets.

And to shock further, let’s say it: Kia is entering the very large SUV market with a “low-cost” product. VAT makes the difference. In France, the EV9 starts at 73,000 euros with a modest (204 hp for 2.4 tons) version, but with a comfortable range of 563 km.

To fully grasp what’s happening, you need to zoom out and look at the US market, where demand for this type of vehicle is enormous. There, in the absence of competition, the Tesla Model X has so far had free rein. But resistance is growing every day, and Kia is launching with a stunning offer.

Across the Atlantic, VAT varies by state, with some opting for a 0% rate. In California, a state often seen as a national barometer, the sales tax rate is 8.75% (compared to 20% in France). To be even more aggressive, Kia offers a version with a “small battery” of 76.1 kWh of the EV9 starting at $54,900 before taxes (€49,800). Including California’s VAT, the final price is $59,700 (€55,100 including tax).

Is the Tesla Model X too expensive?

With the “French” version featuring a 99.8 kWh battery, the price rises to $59,200 pre-tax (€54,600 in states without VAT), or ultimately €59,400 including taxes in California. As we said, it’s not exactly cheap… at least in the most interesting market for it.

Meanwhile, the Tesla Model X starts at $79,990 pre-tax (€73,700 pre-tax). Including California’s VAT, that climbs to €87,000. This price difference will surely influence family decisions when choosing.

Yes, the two rivals have very different technical specs regarding performance, but their range is similar. Only a 13 km difference, mainly due to Tesla’s superior aerodynamics. And as we know, today, range is the top criterion after price. In the US and everywhere else. Having 680 horsepower just to drop the kids off at school isn’t very rational when you’re paying $20,000 more.

The reception of the KIA EV9 in American media has been quite phenomenal, with enthusiasm comparable to what was seen recently with the Tesla Cybertruck. Influencers and journalists celebrate, with headlines, the opportunity to drive the Korean XXL SUV.
