The Incredible Electric Mercedes G-Class!

How to present a model where nothing changes, but everything changes? That’s the paradox of this electric Mercedes G-Class.

The Mercedes G-Class has a terribly outdated style, but it is absolutely timeless. So, as we fully step into the 21st century, why change everything? The engine is sufficient. With the Mercedes-Benz G 580 equipped with EQ technology, the star brand introduces its first fully electric variant of its icon off-road vehicle.

The electric G-Class remains true to the character of the model, maintaining its angular silhouette and all its iconic elements. Like the versions with a conventional engine, its body relies on a ladder frame. The development team has modified and reinforced this frame to incorporate the electric motorization. The combination of a new double triangulation independent front suspension and a newly developed solid rear axle has also been preserved. It’s a totally crazy technical choice knowing that the four individually controlled electric motors are located near the wheels… but Mercedes has a hundred-year history and is much better than these new manufacturers with characterless, disposable models. So, why not do what no one would have thought of doing, and still develop a total maximum power of 432 kW!

The now famous G-TURN function allows the vehicle to rotate almost instantly on soft or unpaved surfaces. The G-STEERING function significantly reduces the turning radius during off-road driving. With EQ technology, the Mercedes G 580 can handle slopes of up to 100% on suitable surfaces. The vehicle remains stable on lateral slopes of up to 35 degrees. With a maximum approach depth of 850 millimeters, the electric G-Class surpasses its counterparts by 150 millimeters.

The high-voltage lithium-ion battery integrated into the ladder frame ensures a low center of gravity. With a usable capacity of 116 kWh, it provides enough energy for ranges of up to 473 kilometers according to WLTP standards.

You can imagine, the exceptional has no price, but it still has a cost. The brand new Mercedes-Benz G 580 EQ will be available at launch starting from 174,100 euros in the AMG Line version.
