With a maximum range of 610 km, the Korean electric sedan Hyundai Ioniq 6 will compete in the same field as the Tesla Model 3.

In June, Hyundai partially revealed its new electric vehicle. The Ioniq 6 mainly showcased its design and dashboard — very similar to the Ioniq 5 — and deliberately omitted technical details. Now, that has been addressed.

610 km per charge

The South Korean sedan thus provides details of its range. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 would offer two battery sizes: 53 kWh and 77.4 kWh, already used in other group models like the Kia EV6 or Genesis GV60. Unsurprisingly, the car is built on the same E-GMP platform as these models. The 77.4 kWh battery capacity would enable a range of 610 km per full charge, in the rear-wheel-drive version. This electric vehicle will offer both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants. With the smaller 53 kWh battery, the brand estimates an average consumption of 14 kWh/100 km. This figure is more common for city cars and close to the Tesla Model 3 rival.

Regarding motor power(s), no precise data is available. However, we know that the Hyundai Ioniq 6 with all-wheel drive benefits from the same front/rear duo as the Ioniq 5 and EV6. The front motor delivers 74 kW, the rear 165 kW, for a total of 239 kW or 325 horsepower. Based on other models from the Korean group, the 2WD versions are expected to receive the 168 kW (229 hp) rear motor.

24 km recharged per minute

Finally, charging times are expected to be similar. With a power of 239 kW on the large battery, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 promises from 10 to 80% in just 18 minutes. That means recovering 119 km of range every 5 minutes! For the smaller battery, the power will likely be around 195 kW. Like the Ioniq 5, a V2L function offering bidirectional charging will be included (probably as an option).

Beyond motors and batteries, the electric sedan will feature over-the-air software updates. Whether at the start of production this summer 2022 or in the coming years, this ensures access to the latest advancements. Notably, upgrades to the 12-inch infotainment screens or driver assistance systems. Among the latter, Hyundai will feature an adaptive cruise control “mimicking the driver’s driving style”, 360-degree parking view, collision alerts, and even approaching vehicle warnings when opening doors.

We await the official launch date in France and pricing for this Hyundai Ioniq 6. More details should be available probably at the start of the school year. As a reminder, the Ioniq 5 starts at €44,000, and the Tesla Model 3 at €53,490.
