Nio ET7

With its 150 kWh battery, the new Nio ET7 traveled 1044 km on a single charge during a Shanghai – Xiamen trip.

Who would dare to let their battery level drop to 3%? The anxiety must have been at its peak inside the cabin of the Nio ET7 used for the test. Behind the wheel was the founder and CEO of the Chinese manufacturer, William Li.

After 97% of the battery’s discharge, he had covered a real distance of 1044 km over a 14-hour trip between the Chinese megalopolises of Shanghai and Xiamen. For this journey, he chose the manufacturer’s latest model, equipped with an “Ultra Long Range” battery. With an incredible capacity of 150 kWh, it stands out primarily for having the highest energy density per cell for a civilian vehicle sold in China: 360 Wh/kg. The battery pack weighs 575 kg, just 20 kg more than the 100 kWh version. The total weight of the ET7 is 2490 kg.

Another major advantage of this battery is its ability to be replaced in just a few minutes at Nio’s “swap” stations. In China, 2,289 stations (as of December 2023) allow users to quickly swap their battery and continue their journey. The system’s efficiency is debatable, as managing a vast network of batteries scattered across the country would be necessary to meet continuous demand. Already, 33 stations have opened in Europe.

In China, 34 million battery swaps have already been performed in the brand’s history.

In China, the Nio ET7 will soon be available at a price of 298,000 yuan, approximately 38,300 euros! Better yet: you can purchase only the car and rent the battery capacity you need—75, 100, or 150 kWh—or replace it depending on your upcoming trips. A Tesla Model 3 is less flexible in this regard, but also more expensive.
