Five years ago, Volkswagen unveiled the ID.5. Today, the ID. Tiguan takes over.
On November 3, 2021, Volkswagen unveiled the ID.5, its first electric coupe SUV. Five years later, its name and that of its sibling, the ID.4, are set to disappear from the catalog.
Together, these models have exceeded 950,000 units produced. To succeed them, Volkswagen has chosen a single vehicle and a name that its customers already know well.
The story begins on September 23, 2020, with the presentation of the ID.4. Measuring 4.58 meters in length, this family SUV is the first model of its kind in Volkswagen’s electric lineup. In France, its launch series pairs a 204 hp motor with a 77 kWh battery, for an announced range of 520 kilometers. Thirteen months later, the ID.5 takes this recipe with a difference that is mainly visible from the side. Its roof slopes towards the rear, giving it a coupe silhouette. At the top of the range, the GTX version features two motors and all-wheel drive.
One electric Tiguan to replace two ID.s
Assembled primarily in Zwickau, Germany, the two SUVs have become pillars of the lineup. In February 2026, at the time of delivering its two millionth electric car, Volkswagen had around 901,000 ID.4 and ID.5 delivered to customers worldwide. The duo thus accounted for nearly half of its cumulative electric deliveries.
On October 9, Volkswagen unveiled their successor, the ID. Tiguan. Manufactured in Emden, this new SUV promises up to 600 kilometers of WLTP range depending on the version. In France, pre-orders opened on October 13 starting at 43,990 euros, with a market arrival expected in early 2027. Tiguan enthusiasts will then have a choice: the electric model will share dealership space with the current Tiguan, which will continue its career in thermal and hybrid versions.
