Did you know that Tesla has a Camping Mode?
The Camp Mode proposed by Tesla may sound like a joke, but it is an increasingly popular feature.
On a road trip without a plan deep in the Larzac or simply returning from a grueling professional seminar, you suddenly feel a wave of fatigue. With no hotels in sight, you are left to your own devices, but as a serious driver, you decide to stop immediately to rest. Luckily, you’re driving a Tesla, and its designers have thought of you.
Since 2021, all Teslas come with Camp Mode. When you activate this mode, your car maintains an optimal temperature and air flow inside the cabin. Camp also keeps the 12V power and USB ports active so you can charge or use electronic devices. The touchscreen stays on for you to listen to music, browse the internet, play games, or watch a good movie. The lighting dims and can gradually turn off upon request. Of course, the Sentry mode is disabled to prevent the alarm from waking you up every 5 minutes.
Tesla states on its site that over an eight-hour period, the average power consumption will be around 10%. This is a conservative estimate taking into account that the system will draw more from the battery in extreme cold. However, with the heat pumps now equipped in all models, it’s generally less. In any case, you will not be able to use Camp Mode if the battery percentage is below 20%.
Camping mode or parked?
More generally, activating this mode when you are parked but staying in your car is a good way to maintain a pleasant environment without draining the battery too much. This is actually its main purpose, but a Camping mode always generates more buzz than a “parked” mode.
This feature has, of course, inspired many accessory manufacturers who have rushed to offer inflatable mattresses to truly transform the Tesla into a bedroom. The only remaining issue is the toilet situation the next morning…
