And what if, ultimately, the loss of the Ecological Bonus for Chinese manufacturers, including BYD, turned out to be a boon for consumers?

The 2022 Paris Motor Show marked the start of BYD’s major offensive in France and more broadly in Europe. The latest models from the Middle Kingdom took up significant space in the Halls of Porte de Versailles, abandoned by many traditional manufacturers. On BYD’s (Build Your Dreams) large stand, attractive models of the brand were on display, including the Atto 3, an electric SUV comparable in size to a Peugeot e-3008 or a Renault Scenic E-Tech.

The BYD Atto 3 is equipped with a 60 kWh battery, theoretically guaranteeing a range of 420 km (WLTP mixed cycle). Connected to the rear wheels, the electric motor delivers a power of 150 kW, or about 204 hp. The 0 to 100 km/h acceleration is achieved in 7.3 seconds, while the top speed is limited to 160 km/h.

The Atto 3 started at €44,190. It comes with a standard panoramic sunroof, full LED headlights, faux leather upholstery, and heated front seats. With the 2023 Ecological Bonus, it was priced at €39,190, making it very competitive against its rivals. But alas, the European production subsidy was removed, and the bonus disappeared on December 15.

BYD quickly responded by adjusting the price to €37,990 to restart the sales momentum. Yes, a price even lower than the one with the Bonus! Proof if needed that Chinese manufacturers still have tricks up their sleeves. Ultimately, we are seeing widespread price cuts on Tesla, BYD, Dacia Spring, MG,… without any demand! In the current inflationary context, you have to admit we’re a bit losing the plot.
