A V8 Sound for the Electric BMW M3?
BMW is preparing a unique sound signature for its upcoming electric M3, drawing inspiration from the most legendary combustion engines in its history.
The arrival of the electric BMW M3, expected in 2027, marks a major turning point for the BMW M division. While performance and technology are at the heart of the project, the Bavarian manufacturer does not overlook a key element of its DNA: sound. With the iM3, BMW wants to prove that an electric sports car can still excite… the ears.
In a recent official video, BMW reveals the behind-the-scenes creation of the soundtrack for its future electric sports sedan. Engineers even went as far as to record several iconic combustion engine models to shape a unique sound signature.
In a recording studio, several iconic BMW M models were utilized. This includes the BMW M4 with its 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six, the BMW M3 equipped with a 4.4-liter atmospheric V8, as well as the BMW M5 and M6 with their spectacular 5.0-liter V10.
An electric BMW iM3… but true to the M spirit
These recordings mainly serve to enrich the bass frequencies. A crucial point, as electric motors naturally produce high-pitched sounds. BMW aims to recreate a sound depth reminiscent of combustion sports cars, without trying to mimic any specific engine.
Unlike some concepts that offer a choice of artificial engine noises, BMW bets on a subtle mix of reworked thermal sounds and the actual noise of electric motors. This evolving “soundscape” will accompany the drive, particularly through simulated gear shifts.
Based on the Neue Klasse platform, the BMW iM3 will benefit from an 800-volt architecture and four electric motors, one per wheel. The power has not yet been disclosed, but BMW promises reference-level performance.
