A Cartoonish Overview of the €20,000 Volkswagen

After a very modest initial preview, Volkswagen posted two sketches of its upcoming affordable car on Instagram.

These drawings, with intentionally exaggerated proportions, evoke the second-generation facelifted Volkswagen Polo with rectangular headlights, a flattering reference for brand enthusiasts. Although these images do not provide new information, they contribute to the anticipation with a welcome touch of nostalgia, awaiting the official reveal.

During the general assembly in Wolfsburg, Thomas Schäfer, Volkswagen CEO, outlined the company’s strategic directions. Employees also had a first look at the design of this entry-level electric model, which is expected to be priced around €20,000. Schäfer stated: “We have launched the most ambitious future plan in our history, with a clear commitment: making electric mobility accessible to everyone.”

Volkswagen wants to reinvent its electric world

The unveiling of this model is scheduled for March, but its market launch will only happen in 2027, a delay that is difficult to understand given the agility of Chinese manufacturers, capable of completing all stages in six months. With a competitive price, this Volkswagen aims for a broad audience and intends to return to the fundamentals of the “people’s car.”

The model, now branded with the code IDevery1, is part of the overall strategy alongside the ID. 2all, planned for 2026 at less than €25,000. Since 2019, Volkswagen has sold 1.35 million electric vehicles, but these figures pale in comparison to Tesla, whose annual production could reach 2 million units by 2025.

With its “triple A” plan – Accelerate, Attack, Achieve – Volkswagen aims for global leadership in electric vehicles by 2030. However, this challenge requires major restructuring to catch up with the delays accumulated and prove that the brand is ready to redefine electric mobility.
