Chery confirms the arrival of the Omoda 5 in Europe

A new Chinese manufacturer could very well stir things up in Europe as early as next year. Here comes Chery!

Chery Automotive, the largest Chinese exporter of cars, is preparing to launch the Omoda 5 in Europe. Starting in September, this surprising SUV, launched in the local market in 2021, will be offered in both thermal and electric versions.

The Omoda 5 stands out with a decidedly modern aesthetic, particularly with its impressive grille. It features a two-tone finish, from the body to the wheels. Its fastback profile emphasizes sportiness, but passengers in the back may have a bit of discomfort if they exceed 1.80 m, as the roofline appears to be quite sloping.

The interior of the Omoda 5 will have two levels. While the electric versions will boast a very complete, even luxurious, specification, the thermal models will have to make do with the essentials. No worries, as a dual 20.5-inch touchscreen remains very acceptable, especially for a starting price announced under 25,000 Euros! We can’t wait to discover the beast’s pricing.

Chery moves quickly and effectively

The fifth largest automotive company in China, Chery is a special case. This manufacturer is the largest Chinese exporter and sold nearly 50% of the 1,900,000 cars produced in its factories in 2023. The Omoda models aimed at the European market are already on standby in Singapore, awaiting their transfer to the old continent.

Since February of this year, Chery has established nine subsidiaries in Europe and has decided to set up its headquarters on the old continent in Spain. Well aware that a lasting presence cannot be achieved without local production, particularly due to customs fees, Chery has outlined a business plan that includes production on European soil as soon as possible. To achieve this, unlike other Chinese brands, Chery opted not to build its own factory but to purchase an existing facility and modernize it. The Chinese manufacturer has thus acquired the Nissan plant in Barcelona, where its cars will be produced.
