BMW X5: Electric at the Price of Hybrid, But Which One to Choose?
BMW showcases its new electric X5 at the same price as the plug-in hybrid. A tempting parity on paper.
Same SUV, same price, two philosophies. BMW presents its new iX5 60 electric and X5 50e plug-in hybrid at €105,950, set for commercialization in March 2027. But this equality ends at the catalog: according to the data published and the scales currently expected for 2027, the hybrid would incur about €21,600 in accumulated penalties at a minimum, excluding specific reductions. The electric model is exempt from this.
The electric model wins the numerical match
The financial reason thus pushes towards the iX5. With 578 hp versus 489 hp, a more generous trunk, and slightly better acceleration, it also has solid technical arguments. BMW announces up to 850 km of WLTP range and a charge from 10 to 80% in 23 minutes under favorable conditions.
However, there’s a totally outrageous weight: 2.9 tons, with a 141.2 kWh battery. Efficiency remains relatively uncertain when moving such a behemoth. The tax paradox is worth noting: the electric model escapes the weight penalty, while the hybrid, although 260 kg lighter, is heavily taxed.
The hybrid offers a different kind of comfort
However, in this price range, buyers also seek peace of mind in usage. When the cost of each fill-up is not a source of anxiety, being able to set off again in a few minutes retains a clear appeal. Especially for long stretches, spontaneous departures, or trips with a trailer.
The X5 50e finds its clientele here. Its announced maximum electric range of 106 km allows for daily commutes on battery, provided it is charged regularly. For long trips, the six-cylinder takes over without requiring a charging station search.
The electric appears to be the rational choice on paper. The hybrid charges a premium for a flexibility of use that some customers will prioritize. At this price level, luxury also consists of choosing one’s constraints.
