Bicycles for Everyone, Really? Véligo Paves the Way

On the occasion of European Mobility Week, from September 16 to 22, 2026, Véligo Location reminds us that soft mobility must also be accessible to people who cannot use a traditional bicycle.

Soft mobility promises less polluting, quieter travel and more physical activity. But for whom? When balance becomes fragile, when a joint hurts or when a disability prevents pedaling, the traditional bicycle reaches its limits. Therefore, developing its use is not just about multiplying bike paths: it is also necessary to allow everyone to find suitable equipment.

This is the direction Véligo Location is moving towards. Since early 2026, the long-term rental service from Île-de-France Mobilités has been offering 18 models of bicycles, including eight adapted models. Tricycles, tandems, low-frame bikes, or bikes equipped with hand cranks meet different needs. Some configurations allow for traveling with a caregiver, while others help regain individual autonomy.

Making Bicycles Accessible in Daily Life

One must still choose the right solution. Before any subscription, an occupational therapist conducts a Mobility Assessment at the Bicycle House. The trials, adjustments, and adaptations take into account the user’s capabilities and their environment. Where to store the bike? How to maintain it? These practical questions can condition its use just as much as its technical characteristics.

The offer is primarily aimed at the elderly, people with disabilities, and those whose health temporarily or permanently prevents the use of a traditional bike.

According to Véligo, more than 100 subscriptions were recorded by September 1, and all of its adapted bikes were already rented. This demand underscores the utility of the system, but also the need to develop its availability.

Fourteen Bicycle Houses, fixed or mobile, are planned by the end of 2026. With a goal that goes beyond leisure: to allow more residents of Île-de-France to choose active mobility for their daily commutes.
