Zero Motorcycles offers fast charging on its older electric motorcycles
Zero Motorcycles is preparing a major evolution for 2027: DC fast charging will allow a charge from 20 to 80% in less than 30 minutes. And the pleasant surprise is that it will not be reserved for new motorcycles.
This is still one of the main barriers to electric motorcycles: when you need to recharge while traveling, the wait can quickly become burdensome. Zero Motorcycles intends to seriously reduce the problem with the arrival of level 3 DC fast charging starting in the second half of 2027.
The American brand is currently working on a new CCS port associated with a fast charging module. The system will equip new Zero models from the Street and Dual Sport ranges, with batteries capable of reaching 17.3 kWh. The announced goal is to recharge from 20 to 80% in less than 30 minutes.
Zero upgrades its range
Zero already offers on some models its Rapid Charge system, which increases the charging power from 6.6 to 12.6 kW and reduces the same process to under 45 minutes. The switch to direct current is expected to allow a new milestone, particularly appreciated during long trips.
But the real good news concerns current owners. Zero plans to sell its CCS port and DC module as an accessory for Street and Dual Sport motorcycles starting from the 2022 model year, subject to compatibility.
“We didn’t want to reserve this technology for future Zero models,” explains Pierre-Martin Bos, CEO of Zero Motorcycles, who notes having responded to a recurring demand from customers.
A rather clever strategy: instead of abruptly making its current motorcycles outdated with the arrival of a new generation, Zero intends to offer them a new lease on life. Now, two essential data points remain to be known: the maximum power actually accepted in DC and especially the price of the retrofit. They will determine whether this excellent idea on paper will be equally good in practice.
