Renault unveils the electric version of the Trafic

Renault has just unveiled the fully electric version of its Trafic. The utility vehicle was presented in the German city of Hanover, at the IAA Commercial Vehicles Show.
On the outside, the new Trafic Van E-Tech looks identical to the gasoline versions we already know. Customers will still have the choice between two lengths (5.08 m and 5.48 m) and two heights (1.97 m and 2.50 m). The floor-cab version is also available on this electric model.
The loading volume, which ranges from 5.8 to 8.9 m3 depending on the configuration, has not been reduced despite technical changes. In the L2 version with the partition door, the maximum loading length reaches 4.15 meters, a value that remains unchanged.
A Fully Electric Utility Vehicle Not Designed for Long Trips
The electric motor delivers a power of 90 kW, or 120 hp. It is powered by a 52 kWh battery, which is modest given the vehicle’s size. As a result, the range caps at only 240 km, according to the WLTP cycle. In real-world conditions, it will likely be a bit less. In short, this model is mainly suitable for professionals working in urban or peri-urban environments.
The Trafic Van E-Tech Electric is compatible with AC charging at 7 or 22 kW. As an option, it can also be equipped with a 50 kW charger for fast DC charging. With this equipment, the battery can go from 15% to 80% in 50 minutes on a suitable station.
Is the Electric Trafic on Par with the Competition?
The Trafic Van E-Tech Electric will compete with the Peugeot e-Expert (and its clones from the Stellantis group). In its base configuration, this other electric utility offers a similar-sized battery (50 kWh) and provides a comparable range (230 km). But the Peugeot e-Expert can also be fitted with a 75 kWh battery, extending the theoretical range to 330 km. It also benefits from a slightly more powerful motor (136 hp).
Renault has not disclosed the pricing for the Trafic Van E-Tech Electric. The manufacturer has also not announced a specific launch date at this stage.
