Bike Bonus 2023 and Conversion Premium: Everything You Need to Know About the Assistance

Cars have enjoyed an ecological bonus for nearly 15 years, amounting to several thousand euros. But did you know that the bike bonus can also benefit from generous purchase aids? Only, the amounts vary depending on the type of bike and your income. And a conversion premium can also be added if you sell your old car! Here’s the guide for 2023.

A bike bonus from €150 to €2,000

Implemented in 2018, the bonus for purchasing an electric bike continues this year. It has since increased, as of August 15, 2022, still with a limit of 40% of the purchase price but capped at €400. This is on the condition of having low income. The government also reduces the aid by €100 for less modest incomes, bringing the ceiling to €300. And it provides no aid beyond a certain standard of living. France also revised the thresholds on January 1, 2023, changing the amounts of the RFR (reference tax income).

For the purchase of a cargo bike and folding bike, the bike bonus is higher. It meets the same income conditions, with an amount of €2,000 for low income, and €1,000 for the less modest. However, it remains zero above €14,089/year. Finally, a standard bike can claim a maximum of €150, for very low incomes.

The conversion premium for bikes of €1,500 to €3,000

If you own an old car that you barely use or for your short trips, the conversion premium exists. It’s an opportunity for you to switch from a car to a bike. And for two reasons: one is for your personal benefit (exercise, outdoors) but also for the planet (less pollution).

France offers up to €3,000 for scrapping your vehicle. The vehicle must meet the same conditions as for purchasing a cleaner car. It must have an gasoline engine and be registered before 2011 or be a diesel before 2006. Similar to the bike bonus, the maximum of €3,000 depends on low income (below €6,538/year). Above that, the amount remains €1,500, applicable to everyone, even wealthier individuals.
