For all enthusiasts of the legendary Mercedes G-Class, the future will be electric with the EQG. New information was revealed this week.

It is as loved as it is hated. Produced continuously since 1975, the Mercedes G-Class or Geländewagen (off-road vehicle in proper French) is a true institution and a top-tier off-roader. It must be said that with its military roots (developed with Steyr Puch), it is ready to conquer all terrains and will even be adapted into the Peugeot P4 in 1982.

Different times, different customs; the Mercedes G-Class, with its large petrol engines, is preparing to undergo a transformation. Expected in 2024, the Mercedes EQG will feature four electric motors (one at each wheel) and four transfer cases (one for each electric motor), allowing the EQG to maintain its legendary 4×4 capabilities despite an expected increase in weight (the current model already weighs 2.5 tons).

To prevent off-road suffering, the battery, located under the chassis, will be protected by a carbon kevlar shield. Regarding the battery itself, Mercedes has been somewhat vague but specifies that it will offer a relatively high range and will use a silicon anode chemistry, which could increase energy density by 20 to 40%, meaning a higher capacity in the same storage space.

A Slightly Different Interior

The interior doesn’t lag and features some modifications compared to the combustion model. The steering wheel of the Mercedes EQG will be unique, as will the central console, which will be redesigned and will include a smaller touchpad. The multimedia screen will also include new features specific to driving an electric vehicle, while a G-Turn function will be offered, allowing the vehicle to spin on itself!

Regarding the commercialization, it should take place in 2024 and will allow the Mercedes EQG to coexist for a while with the combustion Mercedes G-Class, which features V8 engines of 421 hp and 585 hp, both subject to a maximum tax penalty of €50,000.
