Sono Sion

Sono didn’t raise enough funds to continue its venture. The rescue operation will be extended until the end of February.

And what if Sono’s solar car ultimately doesn’t come to fruition? Without incoming funds, the German startup will struggle to move forward with its project. That’s why a funding campaign was launched on December 8, 2022. The idea was to invite interested customers to leave a deposit, or even pay the full price immediately, in exchange for a discount on the car. The operation was intended to finance the industrialization phase of the Sion. Unfortunately, Sono did not meet its goals. As a result, the manufacturer has extended the campaign until February 28, 2023.

Sono remains confident despite headwinds

Sono Motors estimates it needs approximately 105 million euros, which corresponds to 3,500 Sion units. So far, the funding campaign has only raised 48 million euros. The company has not even covered half of its target. Despite this, it remains optimistic and continues to believe in a favorable outcome. “We are in talks with potential investors. We believe that extending the campaign will help us reach our goal of around 100 million euros, and continue the Sion program,” explains the manufacturer. Additionally, Sono is pleased to have received 1.46 million euros from the European Climate, Infrastructure, and Environment Executive Agency.

If Sono manages to get through this, the Sion will go into production this year. Pre-production units are expected to roll off the assembly lines this summer. Development of the car continues during the funding campaign, despite the uncertainty surrounding the project. According to Sono, the first crash tests recently took place in Italy.

Sono’s car uses solar panels to partially recharge its battery. It remains dependent on the electrical grid. The idea also appeals to Lightyear, a startup which also seems to be facing difficulties.
