Peugeot e-208 2023: Range, Versions, and Price of the Electric City Car

With a different philosophy from the ZOE, the Peugeot e-208 has serious advantages, starting with its new motor and a range of up to 400 km, without elitist prices.

Launched in 2019 alongside other versions of the new Peugeot 208, the Peugeot e-208 displays a very different design philosophy from the Renault Zoé: while the latter was developed from the outset as an exclusively electric vehicle, the e-208 simply adds an electric powertrain into a chassis initially designed to be compatible with both types of propulsion (electric or 100% thermal).

Dimensions and Motors of the Peugeot e-208

The Peugeot e-208 measures 4.06 meters long, 1.77 meters wide, and 1.43 meters high. These are standard compact car dimensions, comparable to those of the combustion engine 208.

A downside of adapting the chassis for electric technology is that its trunk volume is only 265 liters to accommodate the batteries (compared to 311 liters for the combustion version). In this aspect, the Renault Zoé offers better space with 338 liters.

Regarding the motor, the Peugeot e-208 has a single unit of 136 horsepower, driving only the front wheels and connected to a 50 kWh battery. Thanks to its reasonable weight of 1,455 kg, which is half a hundredweight less than the Renault Zoé, performance is accordingly increased: acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 8.1 seconds. It is nearly a second and a half faster than its competitor from the diamond brand.

At the end of 2022, the Peugeot e-208 received a new 115 kW engine (156 hp) with the same torque. This new-generation motor, advertised as more efficient, is only available on the high-end GT trim.

Range and Charging of the Electric 208

The size of its batteries—50 kWh gross, or 46.3 kWh net—allows the Peugeot e-208 to offer a quite respectable range, with 340 kilometers according to the WLTP homologation cycle. This figure increased to 362 km after a software update in early 2022. While slightly less than the Renault Zoé (between 386 and 395 km depending on the motor), it surpasses much smaller models like the Mini Cooper SE (225 km) or the Honda e (222 km).

The electric 208 perhaps gains a comeback with its late 2022 update. It adopts the new 115 kW motor and pairs it with a 51 kWh battery (48.3 kWh net capacity). Slightly larger and more efficient in consumption, it provides a range of 398 km.

The e-208 can be recharged on alternating current up to 11 kW via the Type 2 socket. Fully charging it at this power takes about 5 hours, or 16 hours using a Green Up type high-power socket. Its main advantage, especially on the highway, lies in fast charging: it can accept up to 100 kW in DC fast charge, allowing much quicker recharging than the Renault Zoé (0 to 80% in 30 minutes versus 1 hour and 10 minutes at 50 kW).

What is the Price of the Peugeot e-208?

While its price was negotiated at €33,800 at the start of 2022, the Peugeot 208 electric is now available from €34,800 in its Like trim. It is slightly cheaper than the base Renault ZOE (€35,100) and directly competes with the Mini Cooper SE (€36,400). Its higher charging power capability of 100 kW probably explains its higher price, a unique feature in this segment.

Like all its competitors, it benefits from the ecological bonus. Its batteries are guaranteed for 8 years or 160,000 kilometers. Note that the car is manufactured in Trnava, Slovakia, and its batteries are supplied by CATL. Its powertrain is the same as that of its cousins, the Opel Corsa-e or the DS 3 Crossback E-Tense.

A Restyling Soon?

As with other versions in its lineup, the e-208 has been on the market for nearly four years. The lion-brand city car will soon undergo a “mid-career refresh.” Whether the electric version will benefit from this update remains to be seen. Last rumors suggest the possible arrival of a model with a smaller battery. The answer is likely in a few months.
