Is the electric car primarily an economical choice?

While motorists are increasingly interested in electric cars, it is primarily for economic reasons. This is the main finding of a study conducted by Deloitte.

Electric cars are generally more expensive, but they allow for significant savings in use. It is also this financial aspect that attracts a growing number of motorists, much more than environmental considerations. A Deloitte study concludes that ecological concerns only rank fifth among the motivations behind purchasing an electric vehicle. The opinions of over 26,000 people surveyed globally also highlight the driving pleasure associated with this type of motorization.

“Despite government messages about the need to combat climate change, the shift to EVs is mainly driven by a strong consumer perception that it will significantly reduce operating costs,” explains Deloitte.

In France, a measured enthusiasm for electric vehicles

Price and range are the main barriers to purchase. The study indicates that an electric car should cost less than €50,000 and have a minimum range of 400 km. It also needs to be able to recharge its battery fairly quickly. Access to charging stations also raises many questions, even though many people prefer to recharge at home first.

In France, 43% of people say they are willing to buy an electrified vehicle to replace their current one. However, this category does not only include 100% electric vehicles; it also covers traditional hybrids and plug-in hybrids. In 2022, 43% were already considering abandoning fully thermal models. Deloitte sees this stagnation as a potential reserve of consumers, based on factors such as price, charging time, range, or lack of charging stations.
