In which region is carpooling the most successful?

Carpooling for daily commutes is increasing in France, but the phenomenon does not affect all regions equally.
According to figures from the national daily carpooling observatory, the French are increasingly willing to share their cars with other travelers. With 783,721 carpoolings recorded in January 2023, a new record has just been set. By way of comparison, the observatory recorded 666,416 carpoolings in November 2022 (the last relevant month for perspective, as December was biased by the end-of-year holidays).
The €100 bonus implemented by the government is probably not foreign to this trend, but it does not fully explain it. Strikes against pension reform have also had an impact, particularly in large urban areas. In fact, this factor may explain the very good figures observed in Île-de-France. With more than 224,000 shared trips in January, the Paris metropolitan area is by far the most successful. Normandy (123,100) and Pays de la Loire (103,300) complete the top three. Burgundy-Franche-Comté ranks lowest, with fewer than 6,000 recorded carpoolings in January.
Carpooling Still Depends on Support Programs
In certain cities or regions, carpooling is boosted by local subsidies. Incentives provided by employers also seem to play an important role. “Beyond community subsidies, joint efforts by employers around a carpooling platform can significantly develop the practice,” explains the observatory. This is the case in Toulouse, where dozens of employers (Airbus, ATR, Safran, Irrijardin, ASEI…) are developing carpooling themselves and making the Pink City one of the metropolitan areas with the most carpooling in France.
