JO Paris 2024: 60 km of cycling paths to connect the Olympic sites

As you may have noticed, traffic in Paris and around Paris has become difficult, very difficult. Besides the endless construction projects, the preparation for the Olympic Games is causing a real nightmare for drivers, but also for cyclists, whose bike lanes are often blocked or cut off due to these very construction sites, posing a major safety risk to individuals.

However, the end of the preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games should not necessarily improve traffic conditions, since it is the influx of tourists that will likely further saturate public transport and roads.

To “relieve” traffic, enhancements and the expansion of bike lanes are expected to improve the situation, according to the City of Paris and the Seine-Saint-Denis department. During a press conference, David Belliard, deputy for mobility at the City of Paris, specified that “60 km of Olympic lanes (in Paris) will allow us to connect all sites by bike.” For the Seine-Saint-Denis department, “an additional 25 km will be built,” announced the president of the departmental council, Stéphane Roussel.

But it is also necessary to have places to park bikes. To this end, 10,000 bike parking spaces will be installed near Olympic sites (Champs-de-Mars, Roland-Garros, Stade de France…) using racks, which will then be dismantled and reused at other sites after the Paris 2024 Olympics. Taking the Stade de France as a specific example, it is set to benefit from 3,000 “permanent” parking spaces.

Finally, the fleet of free-floating bikes will increase, with a fleet of 3,000 additional Vélib’ bikes, as mentioned in a previous article.
