Contrary to what his CEO Carlos Tavares announced, Stellantis may manufacture electric city cars and electric batteries in Spain by 2025.

Founded in early 2021, Stellantis Group has become very significant since it incorporated the following brands (Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, DS Automobiles, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot, Ram, Vauxhall… and all service subsidiaries like Free2Move) within its fold.

According to the Spanish media CincoDías, Stellantis – which sells a lot in Spain – and the government of Pedro Sánchez are in discussions for the automaker to have its electric vehicles built under the STLA platform in Spain.

According to our Spanish colleagues, this new partnership could materialize in 2025 and would strengthen the industrial activity of the three existing Stellantis factories (Vigo, Zaragoza, and Madrid).

The Stellantis platform in question is the STLA Small. It concerns city models such as the Peugeot e-208 and the Opel Corsa-e. Conversely, the large-platform STLA, dedicated to larger vehicles, will be manufactured in Italy, in Cassino.

The production of Stellantis electric vehicles in Spain could also pave the way for battery manufacturing in this territory. “By 2035, all cars in Europe will need to be electric because the European Union has decided so (…) therefore, of course, batteries will need to be produced, there is no doubt. There will be battery factories in Europe and probably also in Spain,” stated last year Uwe Hochgeschurtz, Stellantis’ operations director for Europe.

A Dieselgate for Stellantis?

This week is certainly busy for the Stellantis automotive group, which is also targeted by a complaint from the Diesel Emissions Justice Foundation. According to the foundation, Stellantis is guilty of using cheat software. “We are presenting new evidence today in court that Peugeot also uses cheat software in diesel vehicles. The two Peugeots tested date from 2016 and 2017 and employed different techniques meant to limit harmful emissions. The investigation shows that Peugeot cheats in both cases,” explains Wesley Vader, lawyer for Diesel Emissions Justice Foundation.

A new saga that could accelerate the end of diesel fuel, at least for passenger cars.
