While the search for reduced automobile pollution is essential, we must not forget that road surfaces are not very eco-friendly. But that was before the advent of the new Biophalt process.

It’s no secret, but asphalt is not really good for health. During installation, the fumes released contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. But that’s not all. Other studies have highlighted the impact of solar radiation on asphalt, leading to the deterioration of certain components like bitumen polymers. These can leach into the soil after heavy rains. Considering the worsening weather conditions and especially global warming… The signals are indeed in the red regarding asphalt.

Instead of enduring future government decisions, some road professionals, such as APRR motorways, are accelerating the implementation of a new generation of surfacing materials called Biophalt®, which is more environmentally friendly. Five years of research and development were required by Eiffage Route to develop this new asphalt mixture made from recycled materials, a plant-based binder, and produced at lower temperatures. After laying 2 km of the A40 motorway, now 270 m² of parking spaces on the Dracé area (A6) are using the Biophalt® process.

A Growing Momentum in the Coming Years

«Combining technical and environmental performance on our sites is possible thanks to asphalt mixes containing plant-based binders. Additionally, thanks to their drainage bases, these materials help permeabilize the paved surfaces, which is a clear advantage during heavy rain. The organization of work also plays a role in the overall assessment of our operations. For the recent renovation of the Dracé area (A6), the work was carried out 100% locally, by an Eiffage agency located 20 km from the site. » explains Jean-Emmanuel GAREL, Deputy Director of Operations, APRR.

This technique is expected to further develop, and the APRR and AREA networks aim to renovate about fifteen highway areas per year, as well as a 14 km section of the A6 motorway in the Auxerre sector (Lyon-Paris direction).
