In addition to other regional and national aid programs, Brest Métropole offers up to €500 for the purchase of an electric bicycle.

A good initiative by Brest Métropole to encourage residents to switch to electric bikes was launched last week. The metropolis provides up to €500 in subsidies (depending on income) to residents over 18 years old for the purchase of an electric assist bike (VAE) or VAE Cargo.

Residents of the towns of Brest, Bohars, Guilers, Guipavas, Gouesnou, Le Relecq-Kerhuon, Plougastel-Daoulas, and Plouzané are eligible for this aid.

This subsidy can be combined with other aids: the bike bonus from the government and those from certain Breton municipalities. Brest Métropole grants the aid only once per person. Payment will be made after purchasing the bike from a local distributor/repair professional.

Brest’s aid is available through this link, including the conditions to qualify.

What aids are available for buying an electric bicycle?

Bike Bonus

First, any resident of the French metropolis can request the “Bike Bonus” aid from the government. It is divided into two categories: mechanical bike aid and electric bike aid. Your financial resources will determine the exact amount of your bonus.

For a new mechanical bike, you must have a taxable income per share of €6,358 or less, or be in a disability situation. The government grants assistance equal to 40% of the price, capped at €150 (a total cost of €375).

Conversion Bonus

Furthermore, similar to the transition to electric cars, you can benefit from a conversion bonus for purchasing a bike. This is between €1,500 and €3,000.

If you scrap an old vehicle (light vehicle from before 2006 for petrol or before 2011 for diesel), you can get a conversion bonus covering 40% of the VAE’s purchase price. Be aware, you are limited to €1,500 if your taxable income is between €6,358 and €22,983.

Until December 31, 2023, you can receive this bonus for each household member purchasing an electric, folding, cargo, etc., bike with an old vehicle sent to the scrapyard.

If your taxable income is €6,358 or less, or if you are in a disability situation, this bonus can reach €3,000 (or 40% of the bike’s purchase price).

If you live in a low-emission zone and your local authority has provided you with aid for buying or renting an electric assist bike, you will get an increased bonus of €1,000.

And at the regional level?

At the regional level, be aware that local aids exist to encourage switching to electric assist bikes.
