Camion Volcan

Three Swiss individuals have taken on the challenge of conquering the summit of the world’s tallest active volcano in a solar-powered electric truck.

The custom-built solar electric vehicle is en route to Chile to attempt this world record, which could elevate electric mobility to new heights.

The Peak Evolution team was formed in Switzerland by Patrik and David Koller with their childhood friend David Proeschel. All three have careers in automotive engineering and renewable energies. This fully electric versatile vehicle project was launched in 2018 to bring their rather extreme vision of electric mobility to life.

The crazy project of these three visionaries? To drive a solar-powered electric truck to the summit of Chile’s Ojos del Salado volcano at an altitude of 6,893 meters.

The four-wheel drive and steer truck is powered by two electric motors delivering a combined output of 240 kW or 380 hp, with a range of 200 km per charge. A bit light for such an adventure, which is why the truck is equipped with solar panels to recharge while climbing the volcano. These photovoltaic panels consist of 42 m² modules on the roof and mobile extensions on each side, providing a total power of 7.4 kWp.

The beast has already traveled 889 km from Sevelen, Switzerland, to Rotterdam, Netherlands, where it was loaded into a secure double-decker container. The batteries were of course disconnected and neutralized. After a journey of 12,021 km from Rotterdam to San Antonio, Chile, it will be taken to the foot of the volcano, reassembled, and will begin its ascent.
