Opel Astra Sports Tourer GS, the sporty electric station wagon

The Opel Astra break sports a more aggressive body kit while its 100% electric mechanics remain unchanged.

In light of the success of the MG5 station wagon, manufacturers would be foolish to avoid venturing into the electric wagon market. Especially since it no longer requires major specific developments these days. Thus, Opel is trying its luck with the sporty and electric version of its Astra Sports Tourer.

The aesthetic appearance is not unpleasant. Under the bodywork, the renowned Stellantis group’s powertrain can be found. Specifically, a 54 kWh battery coupled with an electric motor of 115 kW (156 hp) and 270 Nm of torque. A combination also found in the Peugeot 2008, Citroën ë-C4, Jeep Avenger, DS, Fiat 600e, etc.

The promised range in WLTP mixed cycle is 413 km, while the contained weight (1760 kg) will spare this Opel station wagon from any Weight Tax in France in 2024.

The main attraction obviously lies in the trunk size. From 516 to 1553 liters! Well, more luggage also means more weight and thus less range. It will be difficult to envision long vacations with only 54 kWh of energy. Charging reaches up to 100 kW and about 30 minutes will be needed to restore 80% of the autonomy.

At home, the built-in charger allows up to 11 kW. The current standard.

In its sporty GS trim, the suspension will be 30% stiffer than the rest of the range.

Although sales are expected to start in early 2024, the price remains unknown. And that’s where the issue lies. In its Compact version, the Opel Astra GS already costs over 41,490 euros (before a 5,000 euro bonus). For the wagon, it will probably be an additional 1,000 or 1,500 euros. Meanwhile, a Tesla Model 3 (if it still qualifies for the bonus in 2024…) will be cheaper and much more relevant.
