A Tesla crushed under a rock. Is it art?

Tesla Model 3 Mexique

This crushed Tesla Model 3, smashed by a nine-ton Olmec-inspired head, is the work of Mexican artist Chavis Marmol.

“My idea was to create a work to troll Elon Musk,” succinctly stated the creator of the sculpture, Chavis Marmol. From there to sacrifice a poor Model 3 worth 40,000 euros that had nothing asked of anyone! That’s art.

Chavis Marmol is a 42-year-old sculptor who has never owned a car and travels by bicycle. It was certainly during a bicycle ride that he had this crazy idea to place a nine-ton sculpture on a blue Tesla Model 3 in Mexico City. If you were wondering which would win in a meeting between a Model 3 and a nine-ton stone, you have your answer.

Why?

The sculpture is inspired by the colossal heads sculpted by the Olmec people, considered the first great Mesoamerican civilization. The work was commissioned by a boutique hotel in the Roma neighborhood that partnered with Marmol and placed the monumental piece in front of its building. A video released by the Colima 71 hotel shows the moment the head was dropped, and the car’s roof gradually collapsed, but not before the batteries were removed.

The first challenge was obtaining the car, which costs about $40,000 on the used market in Mexico. A generous donor provided the model while the artist sculpted a block of stone weighing over ten tons to birth his work. A crane, the stone falls on the car, and there you have it, it’s art.

We spare you the lunar and hateful discourse of the artist towards Elon Musk, which ultimately holds no interest. Everyone is free to form their own opinion on the work and the artistic journey, but as far as we are concerned, creating a better world through new mobility takes precedence over this constant need for malice and destruction in which our society is unfortunately mired.
