Madusan Corée du Nord

The North Korean regime unveiled this week the crown jewel of its automotive industry, the Madusan. But doesn’t it ring a bell?

Believe it or not, North Korea has an automotive industry. After all, it’s not too surprising since when you know how to make weapons of war and satellite launchers, what could be more ordinary than a four-wheeled vehicle? There is no way they’re going to lag behind the damn neighbor, South Korea. The world’s most closed country has therefore decided to manufacture its own cars for local consumers. At least for those who can afford to own a car, which is not many. And to speak of an automotive industry is a bit exaggerated since these are Chinese cars barely modified and sporting the badges of numerous local brands, all more ghostly than the others, as you might have guessed.

Like a sense of déjà vu

But all of that belongs to the past because the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea now has with Madusan a world-class manufacturer. Announced with a range of 720 km, this large 100% electric sedan has appeared on social media. With a mix of slow-motion, zooms, and fast-forward views, accompanied by quirky sound effects and Top Gun-style music, its promotional video is a kitschy masterpiece not to be missed.

But upon closer inspection, the crudely masked hood badge intrigues just as much as the lines that are reminiscent of a Chinese model sold in France. The smoke and mirrors are not enough, and it’s very easy to recognize a BYD Han. An excellent car for sure, but whose range does not exceed 515 km, and which was launched over two years ago! As for novelty, they could have done better.

North Korea is therefore not yet a major automotive power, just a nation importing cars like many others. Lying is not good…
