Morocco will have a high-speed train (TGV) by 2040

The Morocco announced a plan to build 1300 km of high-speed railway lines to connect cities and airports of the Kingdom.
While the idea of a rail tunnel under the Strait of Gibraltar between Morocco and Spain is still on hold, the connection of the major cities of the Kingdom has been launched. A vast modernization plan will reshape the map of Morocco with “distances” reduced.
Since November 2018, a first high-speed train line connects Casablanca and Tangier, via Rabat, in just 2h10, compared to 4h45 in the past.
As part of the high-speed train project between Kenitra and Marrakech via Rabat and Casablanca, as well as the realization of the regional railway network in both Casablanca and Rabat, the Minister of Transport and Logistics, Mohamed Adeljalil, indicated that Mohammed V International Airport – Casablanca and Rabat-Salé Airport will be connected to the railway network with increased frequency.

A railway plan by 2040
In order to strengthen the railway connection between the cities and airports of the Kingdom, the National Office of Railways (ONCF) conducted a structuring prospective study for the extension of the railway network called “Railway Plan 2040”. This plan resulted in the establishment of a project to construct 1300 km of new high-speed railway lines. The plan also aims to establish 3800 km of new traditional railway lines to connect 43 cities instead of 23 currently and transport 87% of the national population instead of 51% currently, while ensuring the connection of 12 ports – up from 6 currently – as well as 15 international airports instead of just Mohammed V Airport currently.
This railway modernization will be a true economic lifeline for Morocco, with thousands of jobs at stake. As for tourism, it will also benefit from this growth by bringing cities closer together. Morocco has not yet specified what its technical partners will be for this project, although French Alstom will obviously be on the… tracks. The SNCF group is already integrated into this project which was initiated in 2009.
