At Tesla, the kilometer is worth 15 cents.

Here is roughly what the cost per kilometer of use is between a new Tesla Model Y and a used one of the same model year.

Like every morning for over a week, we went to take a quick look at the stock of Tesla France to see if a Model Y at 36,990 euros was available. And like every morning for over a week, we found at that price only a model showing 55 km on the odometer. Believe us, seeing this car every morning, we’re starting to really like it! The not quite new one that carries a whole promotional and communication operation on its shoulders… It’s our big summer saga! And we feel like the series is far from over. Better than Châteauvallon or The Revenge with Two Faces!

There is, by the way, an identical model available in the certified used section. Registered on December 8, 2023, thus a 2024 model year, it shows only 3,250 kilometers. A car with very low mileage, certainly a company vehicle, really a perfect used car. Its price is 36,500 euros, and it benefits from all possible financing options. Honestly, with such mileage, it’s almost a new vehicle… just like our dear Model Y at 36,990 euros!

A Tesla Model Y remains a Tesla Model Y

So we whip out the calculator and enter the price difference of 490 euros and the 3,195 km difference between these two models to arrive at a depreciation of 15.3 cents per kilometer traveled. Of course, this figure has absolutely no value other than the one we choose to attribute to it. In some cases, numbers are stubborn, and in others, we make them say what we want. The stubborn figure, I’m sorry to insist, is the 50 displayed by the odometer of the supposedly new Tesla Model Y that isn’t!

So why waste time waiting for promotions when you can make very good deals on certified used cars? The reality is that a base model Tesla Model Y Propulsion is currently listed at 40,990 euros, after bonuses, which is 4,490 euros more than an identical model showing only 3,000 kilometers on the odometer, which is about 3 to 6 months of average or low use. Have you pulled out your calculator too? The cost per km just went up to 1.38 euros! Meanwhile, don’t overlook the opportunity as we await the real big clearance expected after the presentation of the new Model Y.
