BMW slashes the price of its electric iX2

It is now possible to drive a BMW iX2, in M Sport Pro trim, for less than a Tesla Model 3. This raises questions.

In life, there is what one deserves, and then there is what one has. This is called reality. Thus, BMW, one of the pioneers of electric mobility in Europe, particularly in the two-wheeler world with its brilliant CE04, is still struggling to sell its decarbonized cars.

The disappearance of the ecological bonus in Germany at the end of 2023 presents a real problem between supply and demand. The European Union requires traditional manufacturers to shift towards electric vehicles but does not support this transition. This is going to lead the entire industry into a wall. In Germany, the premium segment is going through a huge crisis, with factories operating at only two-thirds of their capacity on average. Audi has already eliminated its night shifts to save costs, while other manufacturers are contemplating, for the first time in a decade, closing factories. With thousands of jobs at stake.

XXL Discounts

No other choice for manufacturers but to slash the prices of their electric cars. Why? Because selling more combustion-engine cars is not a possibility, otherwise, the average annual emissions increase, resulting in record fines. Better to lose money satisfying customers with discounts than to pay European penalties. Manufacturers are caught between a rock and a hard place.

At BMW, for example, there is an incentive to heavily discount the iX2 (with a very particular design, it must be said…) to quite crazy proportions. Thus, Mobiwisy found an example that, configured this way, costs 56,200 euros in the catalog. M Sport Pro package, Premium package, metallic paint, large 20-inch wheels, and an options list as long as a day without bread.

Despite all its qualities, including a respectable range of 468 km thanks to its sufficient power of 204 horsepower, the iX2 is discounted by about 11,300 euros. Additionally, one must add the 4,000 euros ecological bonus. This brings the final price down to 40,894 euros, compared to 41,490 euros for a Tesla Model 3 in August 2024. What the numbers do not reveal is the perceived quality difference between these two vehicles. The first meets BMW’s luxurious standards, while the latter takes a more American and low-cost approach to materials.

If you were to ask us to choose, it would be clear; the only weakness of this BMW iX2 is its charging speed on a fast charger, limited to 130 kW, compared to 175 kW for a Tesla Model 3. As for the rest…
