What if the electric car was the missing glue in a family? The many charging sessions at the station will provide an opportunity to initiate discussions or even entertain together. With this in mind, the BMW group announced that the classic card game from Mattel, UNO, will be showcased and available shortly afterward during the Gamescom 2024 fair in Cologne, Germany. The game will then be rolled out via the AirConsole platform to over 500,000 BMW and MINI vehicles through a remote update on August 21. Uno complements BMW’s gaming offerings as “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” has already been available in some vehicles since 2022.

The game will be available in the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United States. In Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Thailand, South Africa, India, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, it will only be available with a personal eSIM and BMW Operating System 8.5. Unfortunately, it will not be available on BMW 2 Series Coupe, 3 Series, and 4 Series.

How does it work?

This update will be entirely free for BMW users, with the German manufacturer taking inspiration from, but with more impact than, what Tesla is already doing in its cars. However, it will be necessary to download the AirConsole app on smartphones, which will turn into game controllers. Another requirement: the affected cars must have the BMW / MINI Operating System 9 in combination with BMW Digital Premium / MINI Connected Package and with BMW Operating System 8.5 in combination with BMW ConnectedDrive Professional. Four players, and thus as many phones, can compete during exciting games as long as the BMW is parked in Parking mode. It is impossible to play while the car is in motion… and also impossible to cheat since the cards are virtual.
