Good news should lower the price of the Tesla Model 3

The Tesla Model 3 produced in China has not escaped the punitive customs duties imposed by the European Commission. But now is a time for easing tensions.

On Friday, July 5th, the European Commission began applying variable duties on electric vehicles imported from China. It is important to note that these charges come in addition to the previous 10%. The naughty little ducks that did not cooperate with Brussels during the European investigation into Chinese subsidies have logically received very heavy fines, up to 36.3%. This is notably the case for MG, flagship of the state group SAIC. The Sino-British brand has decided not to raise its prices, relying on its stock to weather the storm while time runs out.

Tesla is doing very well

The American manufacturer Tesla is not a Chinese company by definition, but the Model 3s sold in Europe are predominantly produced in Shanghai. They have therefore not escaped European scrutiny but were relatively spared from the outset with a flat penalty of 21%. However, this is still enough to affect the price of the sedan, as after a brief pause, Tesla raised its prices by 1,500 euros. But rather than playing the victim, Tesla went to great lengths to advocate for its cause and managed to obtain a revision of its status on August 20th, reducing the rate to 9%. And it’s not over yet, as according to Zonebourse, it is expected to drop to 7.8% soon!

With a quick calculation, one could say that Tesla has just saved nearly 1,000 euros per model. Now it just remains to pass this reduction on to the customer’s bill. The prices on the Tesla France website are currently 41,490 euros for the Propulsion model, 50,490 euros for the All-Wheel Drive Long Range, and 57,490 euros for the Performance model. The coming days will be interesting…
