Air France-KLM increases its agreement for the purchase of more sustainable aviation fuel with TotalEnergies.

TotalEnergies and Air France-KLM have signed an agreement for the supply of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), a more sustainable aviation fuel. The new agreement provides for the supply of 1.5 million tons over a period of 10 years, compared to the 800,000 tons of SAF initially planned when the protocol agreement between the two groups was signed in 2022. SAFs can reduce CO2 emissions by at least 75%, and up to 90%, compared to their fossil equivalent.

Both groups thus reaffirm their ambition to limit the climate impact of air transport by reducing CO2 emissions. This new agreement has been made possible by the very positive initial tests conducted with this fuel and, above all, the increase in production volumes by the oil company.

This fuel is not intended to be used as an immediate replacement for good old kerosene. Production is largely insufficient and prices are far too high compared to fossil fuels. This first step aims to incorporate at least 10% of more sustainable aviation fuel across all flights by 2030, which is more than double the regulatory obligations. Through this, Air France-KLM aims for a 30% reduction in its CO2 emissions per passenger/km compared to 2019.

SAF is produced from waste and residues from the circular economy and processed in the oil company’s biorefineries and refineries in France and Europe. This second-generation biofuel does not compete with the food chain for humans or animals. It will be used to fuel flights departing from France, the Netherlands, and other European countries.
