An Ultimate Extreme Supra Before Hybridization?

To better revive its sports car, Toyota presented the special limited edition Supra “A90 Final Edition” with only 300 units available.

In 2019, driven solely by the will of its president Akio Toyoda, aka Morizo, Toyota resurrected the Supra after 17 years of absence. Morizo then declared: “At the time, I spent countless hours behind the wheel of an old Supra at Nürburgring to become a test driver. The Supra is like an old friend who holds a special place in my heart. While other manufacturers were testing their new prototypes, I shared the track with them in an old Supra that was no longer even in production. So, even though Toyota had no plans to develop a new Supra, like many other passionate fans around the world, I secretly hoped it would happen.”

The current Supra has continuously evolved since its launch, with partially improved models released in 2020 and 2022. But with its 3.0-liter inline-six engine originally from BMW, it has become completely outdated and has been limited in many markets, including France, where its €60,000 environmental penalty doubles its sale price! It’s time for it to bow out, but not without burning a last bit of rubber.

Toyota GAZOO Racing, the Japanese automaker’s motorsport division, created the limited special edition Supra “A90 Final Edition” as the pinnacle of the model. It features numerous purely sporty upgrades, such as increased engine power and torque, Brembo brakes, and a reinforced chassis rigidity, as well as a KW suspension system inherited from the GT4 racing version. The result is an ultimate model with 435 horsepower, purely combustion-powered, enhanced with a body kit that heavily utilizes the most beautiful of sporty materials: carbon fiber.

And what about the future? Since the Supra is Morizo’s favorite child, it is highly likely that it will have a successor but will lose its inline-six engine. It’s still too early to consider a 100% electric version, which the Celica and/or the MR2 can easily handle. How about a beautiful hybrid sharing its powertrain with an explosive GR Yaris? We’re in!
