A Full Tank of Cooking Oil Offered with Every Purchased Diesel BMW

BMW HVO 100 Neste

In order to reduce CO2 emissions at all levels, BMW is addressing the very first fill-up of its Diesel cars.

Starting in January 2025, BMW will fill all diesel models produced in Germany with 100 HVO before delivering them to dealerships. The abbreviation HVO stands for “hydrotreated vegetable oil,” and the “100” indicates that it is 100 percent pure, guaranteed without added fossil energy. The initial filling at factories before delivery is between five and eight liters, depending on the model. Admittedly, this is not huge and burning a few less liters of Diesel won’t make a big difference for the planet, but the gesture is anything but trivial coming from a giant in oil like BMW. We know that Diesel will not disappear tomorrow, but we can already start trying to do without it.

This fuel significantly contributes to reducing CO2 emissions compared to the use of fossil fuels. Compared to fossil diesel, HVO 100 is a higher quality product and offers numerous technical advantages: in addition to emitting less CO2, its chemical properties deliver better cold start behavior. It is also resistant to microbial contamination (diesel pest) due to its purity.

The HVO 100 fuel is used in BMW factories in Munich, Dingolfing, Regensburg, and Leipzig, which produce over 50% of BMW Group’s diesel vehicles annually. Produced by the Finnish company Neste, the world’s leading producer of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), renewable diesel, and raw materials for various applications in the polymer and chemicals industries, it allows for a reduction of up to 90% in emissions over the fuel’s life cycle compared to fossil diesel. The HVO 100 produced by Neste is also used in BMW’s logistics trucks.

Since late May 2024, HVO can also be sold at gas stations in Germany. The fuel is produced from various waste products such as cooking oils, residues, and other renewable raw materials. For your information, to moderate some critics at the source, it does not contain palm oil.
